Amazing story of Sai Baba  :-

Sai Baba's Sanskrit knowledge

In this article we will see how Sai Baba explained the meaning of a verse of Geeta to one of his devotees. Some people had the belief that Baba did not know Sanskrit language and Nanasaheb also had the same belief about him. This is mentioned in Chapter 39 of Sai Sachcharitra.
Readers, after reading this article, you will know how Baba used to remove the doubts of people by knowing their thoughts.

Baba explaining the meaning of a verse of Srimad Bhagavad Gita:-

No one knew even in their dreams that Baba was also knowledgeable in Sanskrit. One day, by explaining the meaning of a verse of Geeta to Nanasaheb Chandorkar, he left people in awe. Nanasaheb Chandokar was one of the learned students of Vedanta. He had studied Gita along with many commentaries and was proud of his knowledge. His opinion was that Baba was completely ignorant of Sanskrit language. That is why Baba thought of clearing his confusion. This was at a time when devotees used to come to Shirdi in small numbers. Sai Baba used to talk to devotees in private for long hours. At this time Nanasaheb was serving Baba's feet and was humming something in unclear words.

Baba – Nana, what are you saying slowly?

Nana – I am reciting a verse from Geeta.

Baba – Which verse is that?

Nana – This is a verse from Sri Bhagavad Gita.

Baba – Just say it in a loud voice.

Then Nana started saying the 34th verse of the fourth chapter of Shri Bhagavad Gita: -

“ That’s what you’re doing by bowing down, asking questions and serving.
They will teach knowledge to the wise and the seers of the truth.”

Baba – Nana, do you know its meaning?
Nana – Yes, Maharaj.
Baba – If you know then tell me also.

Nana – This means – know that knowledge by paying obeisance to the knowledgeable persons who know the essence, by serving and asking questions with sincerity. Those knowledgeable people, who have attained Brahma, will preach knowledge to you.

Baba – Nana, I don't want this kind of complex meaning. Me, by pronouncing each word and its translation.
Explain the grammatical meaning.

Now Nana started explaining the meaning of each word.
Baba – Nana, is it enough to just do prostrations?

Nana – I don't know any other meaning of Pranipat other than saying Namaskar.
Baba – What is the meaning of questioning?
Nana – Asking questions.

Baba – What is the meaning of the question?
Nana – Same (asking question).

Baba – If the meaning of both pariprashna and prashna is the same, then why did Vyas use the prefix pariprasang.

Nana – I don't know any other meaning of the question.

Baba – Service. What type of service is meant here?

Nana – The same thing we always do for you.

Baba – Is this service enough?

Nana – And beyond this, I do not know any specific meaning of service.

Baba – In the second line Upadekshyanti Te Gyanam, can you use another word in place of the word Gyan and tell its meaning?

Nana – Yes.

Baba – Which word?

Nana – ignorance.

Baba – Does the meaning of this verse come out by adding that word instead of Gyanam?

Nana - No, there is no such explanation in Shankar Bhashya.

Baba – If not, then what. If a better meaning can be derived from the use of the word ignorance then what is the objection in it?

Nana – I don't know how the word ignorance will be used in it.
Baba – Why did Krishna advise Arjun to greet the wise or wise people, ask them questions and serve them? Wasn't Krishna himself a philosopher? In fact, he himself was the embodiment of complete knowledge.

Nana – Yes, he was an incarnation of knowledge. But I do not understand why he asked Arjun for other wise men.

Baba – Didn't you understand?

Now Nana became confused. His pride was shattered. Then Baba himself started explaining the meaning in this way.

It is not enough to simply pay obeisance to the wise. We should surrender ourselves to the Sadguru with utmost devotion.
Just asking questions is not enough. Questions should not be asked with the intention of getting caught in any bad attitude or hypocrisy, or with the intention of trapping someone in a sentence, or finding any fault, rather the question should be asked with eagerness only with the intention of attaining salvation or progress on the spiritual path.

I am completely free to serve or refuse, one who works with such a feeling cannot be called service. He should feel that I have no right over my body. Only the Guru has authority over this body and it exists only for his service.

By behaving in this way you will attain knowledge from Sadguru, as mentioned in the previous verse.

Nana could not understand how the Guru teaches ignorance.

Baba – How is the preaching of knowledge? That is, the education of self-realization to be received in the future. Knowledge is the destruction of ignorance. (Is there any other difference in knowledge other than destroying ignorance?) Destroying darkness means light. When we talk about destroying Dghaita, we talk about Adhaita. When we talk about destroying darkness, it means that we are talking about light. If we want to experience the state of adhaita, we must destroy the feeling of dghaita. This is the symptom of attaining Adghaita state. Who can discuss Adhaita while living in Dhaita? Unless such a state is achieved, can anyone experience it?

The disciple is the embodiment of knowledge just like Shri Sadguru. There is difference between them only in the state, higher experience, amazing supernatural truth, unique ability and opulence. Sadguru is Nirguna formless Sachchidanand. In fact, He voluntarily assumes a human body only for the welfare of mankind and the world, but even after assuming a male body, there is no hindrance in the infinity of His existence. Their self-attainment, benefits, divine power and knowledge remain the same. The disciple also has the same form in reality, but due to countless births, ignorance develops in him and being under its influence, he gets confused and forgets his pure conscious form. Look at Chapter 5 of Geeta. अज्ञानेनावृतं ज्ञानं तेन मुहरंती जन्तावः. As explained there, he gets the illusion that he is a living being, a creature, weak and helpless. The Guru cuts off this root of ignorance and throws it away and that is why he has to preach. To such a disciple who has been believing for many births that he is a living being, weak and helpless, the Guru gives such teachings for hundreds of births that he is God, almighty and capable, then at some point he gets a little realization. That in reality I am God. It is because of his constant illusion that he feels that he is a body, a living being, and that God and the world are something different from him. This is just an illusion, which has arisen due to taking many births. Every living being experiences happiness and sorrow according to his karma. To destroy the root of this confusion, this error and this ignorance, we should ask ourselves how this ignorance came into existence. Where is that ignorance and pointing out this error is called preaching.

Given below are examples of ignorance –

I am a living being.
The body is the soul. (I am the body)
God, world and living beings are different elements.
I am not God.
Body is not soul, unaware of it.
Not knowing that God, the world and living beings are all one.

Unless these errors are pointed out to him, the disciple can never realize what God, soul and body are, what is their interdependent relationship and whether they are different from each other or are separate or the same. Giving this type of education and removing confusion is called enlightenment of ignorance. Now the question is that why does the living being, who is the embodiment of knowledge, need knowledge? The purpose of preaching is only to destroy ignorance by bringing the error to one's notice. Baba further said –

Pranipata means surrender.
We should surrender with body, mind and wealth (in an exclusive sense, that is, when we do not have any hope from anyone other than our Guru, Ishta or God, this is called exclusive surrender).
Why does Krishna point towards other wise men? For a true devotee, every element is Vasudev. (Bhagavad Gita A. 7-19 i.e. any Guru is Krishna for his devotee) and the Guru considers the disciple as Vasudev and Krishna considers both of them as his life and soul.
(Commentary of Gyanadev on Bhagavad Gita A. 7-18) Since Shri Krishna was aware that many such devotees and gurus were present, hence Shri Krishna mentioned this to Arjun only to increase their importance.

Glory to Shri Sadraguru Sainath Maharaj
